Elmira ASC, LLC

After you have been seen by Dr. Rosenberg and have decided that you would like to proceed with cataract surgery, our team will contact you within a few business days to schedule your procedure and give you information regarding your pre-operative appointment, surgical appointments, follow-up appointments and any financial responsibility you may have.

Your pre-operative appointment includes eye measurements which will be done at 207 Madison Avenue in Elmira and then you will meet with one of our skilled nurses to go over your health history, eye drop instructions and answer any questions you may have about surgery.  This is generally done a few weeks before surgery.

Requirements on Surgery Day

If you are sick or have an infection, we won't be able to perform your surgery, so if that happens, let us know and we'll reschedule.

Either the night before or the morning of surgery, shower or bathe.  Cleanliness is critical and it helps us reduce the risk of an eye infection after surgery.

Make sure to wear fresh, clean clothes to your surgical appointment.  You'll be able to stay dressed; a covering will go over your clothes.

Try to arrive at your designated arrival time; if you arrive too early, you may have a long wait.

Most patients at our facility are here for approximately 2 hours.  In some cases, your unique needs, or the needs of those scheduled before you, may require a longer stay.

You will need a driver to and from surgery, and we'll except that person to be available at our facility the entire time that you are with us.

Upon Arrival at Elmira ASC, LLC

You'll meet with a pre-operative nurse to go over some paperwork the day of surgery and then you'll sit in a surgical chair in the pre-operative area where virtually all patients will receive a sedative medication to help with relaxation.  A series of drops will be instilled in your eye and it will be readied for surgery.  When your preparation is complete (typically about 45 minutes), you will be wheeled into the operating room in the same chair.  We have combination chair/beds that avoid the need to transfer from one to the other.

The Surgery Itself

Surgery starts with more preparation of your eye, to further reduce the risk of infection, then your eye is numbed. An instrument will be inserted into your eye via a small incision to remove your old, cloudy lens.  A new lens implant will then be inserted.  From start to finish, the actual surgery itself typically takes 10-20 minutes.

After Surgery

You'll be wheeled into our post-operative area to review discharge instructions and to be evaluated for discharge.  After about 15 minutes, patients are typically ready to be discharged to the care of whomever brought you to the facility.  The sedative can take some time to wear off, so you should not drive, use machinery or do anything strenuous on your surgical day.  A nurse will call you after surgery to check in on you.
